Right up until the last second, he had a choice.

He could go back to Washington, back to Scully, 
make sure she was as "fine" as she claimed, 
forever.

On the other hand, to finally know, after all 
these years - to be sure that his faith had never 
been in vain ...

The temptation was too strong, and he hated 
himself for it.

When his eyes met the bounty hunter's amused pity 
through the beam of eternal, substantial light, 
he understood: the choice had always been his 
own.

It wasn't until years later that he could bring 
himself to tell Scully.
